Proxy Votes ,

In the run up to the forthcoming County and European elections, certain local politicians are said to be boasting of their success in securing large numbers of proxy votes from constituents. One councillor, I hear, says he's acquired over 30! Either he is breaking the law or has a very, very large close family.
For the help of those who are unable to attend the polling booth themselves, here is a little simple advice.
The law states that nobody is allowed to be proxy to more than two other voters unless they are close relatives.
The proxy you appoint is not allowed to be present when you sign the proxy document to prove your signature and the proxy must... I repeat, must be someone you know and trust. That means you should refuse anyone's suggestions of other people who might act as proxy for you, such as their spouses, children or other party members.
If a representative of a political party comes to you suggesting they act as proxy for you but doesn't offer the alternative of registering for a postal vote, I would advise you to kick them out.
If you apply for a postal vote and make sure you fill in the form with a close friend or relative but certainly not someone you don't really know. That way, your vote will remain private, as it should be.
If you feel you've been misled into filling in a proxy form, please contact the council immediately and they will take the appropriate action.
