A five-year battle by local residents and Liberal Democrat County Councillor Peter Carter to get a footpath reopened across a canal bridge off Caldwell Mill Lane could soon be over.
Locals residents and councillors have been campaigning to get it recognised as a public right of way with a history going back 100yrs since site owners closed it off when the housing estate was built insisting it was now a private access.
After looking back over its history and researching old maps of Kidderminster, Worcestershire County Council is now ready to give it the recognition it should have as a public right of way.
There still has to be a public consultation exercise before it can be put back on the map.
If there are no objections to this order within six weeks the private housing estate Round hill wharf will have to allow public access to the canal bridge
County Councillor Peter Carter said, "At long last, common sense has prevailed."
