In a massive boost to Charles Kennedy , the Liberal Democrats won overall control of Malvern Hills District Council after winning the by-election in the Alfrick and Leigh Ward.
The Liberal Democrat candidate Shelia Young won the once safe tory seat by 9 votes.

This is also a massive boost for the Liberal Democrats in particular the leader of Malvern Hills District Council Tom Wells who is now in a very good position to unseat the Conserative MP for West Worcestershire next year.
The Liberal Democrats now have 20 of the 38 seats on the Council ,having until now shared power with the Green Party.
This by-election victory is the third Liberal Democrat gain since the Local Elections, one from Labour in Shropshire, one from the Conservatives in Warwickshire and now one from the Independents in Worcestershire.
